Man arrested after nearly four-hour rooftop drama

KAJANG: Panic broke out at a residential area in Semenyih when a half-naked man was spotted on the roof of a house brandishing a knife on Wednesday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said police were alerted to the incident by members of the public at about 8.50pm on Aug 4.

With assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department, a police team rushed to the scene and spent nearly four hours coaxing the 48-year-old man, who was clad only in a pair of shorts, to come down from the roof.

“The man was subsequently arrested, and the knife used in the incident was seized.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to have mental health issues. He was taken to Kajang Hospital for further treatment.

“The suspect is also believed to be from outside the Semenyih area. Investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the incident and how he ended up in the neighbourhood,” he said in a statement today.

Naazron added that checks showed the suspect has a record of 26 previous criminal offences, including drug-related cases.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass and Section 6 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for carrying a weapon in a public place.

“Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the nearest police station or reach out directly to the investigating officer, Inspector Mohamad Khairie Ridhwan Azmi, at 011-36307974.”
