PETALING JAYA:

A contractor claimed trial in the Kuala magistrates’ court today to a charge of firing a gun into the air during an incident late last month.

P Sivakumaran, 55, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Ibrahim Ghulam, Berita Harian reported.

Sivakumaran was accused of discharging a firearm at the Sri Muniandy Swamy temple in Ladang Bukit Badong, Bestari Jaya, at about 11.30am on Aug 31.

The charge was framed under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960, punishable under Section 43 of the same Act by up to one year’s jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Zaki Zahid requested that bail be set at RM5,000, citing public interest and media coverage.

But Sivakumaran’s lawyer, Ayasamy Velu, pleaded for a lower amount, saying his client suffered from a slipped disc and asthma, and had cooperated with the police.

The court set bail at RM2,500 with one surety and fixed Oct 7 for mention.
