PETALING JAYA:

The government is developing an app that will require consumers to scan QR codes to buy cooking oil packets, says deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister Fuziah Salleh.

She said the app for the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme System (eCOSS), whose development is being spearheaded by her ministry, will only allow consumers to make purchases once their citizenship is verified.

“We are aware of concerns that foreigners may have access to controlled goods such as cooking oil, sugar, petrol and so on. So far, sugar supplies are sufficient, and are not really an issue.

“However, cooking oil has become an issue for Malaysians who find it difficult to access supplies that are being purchased by foreigners,” Kosmo reported her as saying when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan for her ministry in the Dewan Negara today.

Fuziah said the eCOSS app will cover the entire supply chain, from wholesalers to retailers and consumers.

She said it will apply to purchases of RON95 petrol as well to protect subsidised goods from being bought by foreigners.
