LABUAN, Sept 3 (Bernama) — A strategic joint venture between Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd (ASB) and Legenda Bumimas Sdn Bhd is set to transform scheduled waste management in Labuan.
ASB chief executive officer Datuk Japar Esteban said the partnership would put an end to the long-standing practice of shipping waste to Sarawak, with all handling soon to be carried out at the ASB processing plant in Labuan.
“Operations are expected to commence in December this year.
“This latest move into scheduled waste management marks part of the ASB’s broader business diversification strategy, in line with evolving industry needs and sustainability targets,” he said to Bernama today.
ASB, a Sabah government-linked company based in Labuan, is widely recognised as a one-stop integrated logistics support centre for the oil and gas industry.
He said the agreement takes advantage of ASB’s position as the base for more than 80 oil and gas-related companies, including multinational operators.
“This partnership is a milestone that ensures waste generated within our hub can now be treated and recovered locally, supporting industry needs more efficiently,” Japar said.
“Beyond easing operational challenges, the initiative is also expected to contribute significantly to Labuan’s role as an oil and gas hub in Malaysia,” he said.
Japar said that by reducing the need for long-distance transport of waste, the partnership cuts down on logistics costs, enhances supply-chain efficiency, and supports Malaysia’s carbon-reduction agenda.
He said localised processing and recovery not only minimises ecological impact but also strengthens Labuan’s positioning as a forward-looking hub capable of supporting both multinational corporations and domestic operators with sustainable solutions.
The joint venture agreement between ASB and Legenda Bumimas was signed recently.
Meanwhile, Legenda Bumimas managing director Datuk Tan Pek Chian said the company is proud to be ASB’s first integrated waste management partner, providing collection, storage, and recovery of waste generated from offshore activities.
“Our next step is to establish in-house treatment and full recovery capabilities within the Labuan hub, a strategic RM40 million first-phase investment that reflects our long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitment to close the loop, promote circular and low-carbon waste practices, and reduce the carbon footprint from the supply base to final disposal centres,” he said.
He added that this development would further strengthen ASB’s comprehensive waste solutions, enabling production sharing contractors to achieve greater waste minimisation and recovery at source.
