PETALING JAYA:

Internet crooks are using bogus wedding invitations as their latest trick to cheat the people, according to communications minister Fadzil.

“There are individuals who sent links that seemed to be for invitations to their children’s wedding banquets, but when I asked for a screenshot of the invitation, they asked me to click the link,” he said in Sandakan yesterday.

He said he had asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to look for the individuals, “and they immediately deleted the link”.

“So I advise everyone to please be cautious, scammers are very shrewd,” Bernama quoted him as saying at a retreat for members of the Madani Communities volunteer groups managed by the information department.

He urged them to understand 3R matters (those involving race, religion, and royalty) and be capable of tackling slander and fake news related to the government. They should also verify information before spreading it publicly, he said.

“Spreading fake news can land you in prison, spreading untrue things can result in hefty fines, so we have to issue reminders,” he said.

“Tell the public not to be easily deceived by the information they get, we want to spread what’s true.”
