KUALA LUMPUR: Cathay Cineplexes Pte Ltd, a long-standing player in Singapore’s cinema industry, has ceased operations with immediate effect.
This follows a resolution passed by the company’s directors to place it into provisional liquidation.
In an official notice posted on Facebook, Messrs Tan Kim Han and Luke Furler of Quantuma (Singapore) Pte Ltd have been appointed as joint and several provisional liquidators of the company.
“All future correspondence relating to Cathay Cineplexes is to be directed to Kyer Cooper at [email protected],” the notice said.
The announcement marks the end of an era for a cinema brand that has been deeply entrenched in Singapore’s entertainment landscape for decades.
Cathay Cineplexes reportedly traces its roots back to the iconic Cathay Organisation, one of Singapore’s earliest and most recognisable names in film exhibition and production.
The company was responsible for operating some of the country’s most prominent cinemas, including the flagship Cathay Cineplex at Handy Road, which was once a landmark for moviegoers.
Cathay Cineplexes grew to operate several cinema outlets across Singapore, offering mainstream blockbusters, regional films and art-house titles.
Over the years, the company faced stiff competition from larger players such as Golden Village, Shaw Theatres and WE Cinemas, particularly as viewing habits shifted toward streaming platforms and on-demand services.
