PETALING JAYA:

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will determine whether an inquest should be held to investigate the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin after receiving the full report of a second post-mortem.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said police are investigating Syamsul’s death and will brief the AGC when the probe is completed, Berita Harian reported.

“The AGC and the police will always carry out their respective duties to ensure justice,” he was quoted as saying.

Syamsul, the eldest of three siblings, died on July 28 under circumstances that remain unclear, while with the reserve officers’ training unit.

His death raised questions after the first post-mortem report stated that the cause of death was a seizure.

However, his mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, alleged that her son’s body showed bruises and injuries consistent with physical assault rather than a seizure.

On Aug 26, the Shah Alam High Court allowed Syamsul’s grave in Semenyih to be exhumed for a second post-mortem, which was carried out at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

The family’s lawyer, Naran Singh, reportedly claimed that the second post-mortem revealed suspicious traumatic injuries that were believed to be a possible cause of death.

Additional evidence, including audio recordings, transcripts and photographs, have also been submitted to the police for further investigation.

The case is now being investigated by Bukit Aman’s classified criminal investigation unit.
