KUALA LUMPUR: Congratulatory messages poured in after national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei claimed the world title in Paris today (Aug 31).
The fourth seeded duo were in inspired form as they upset world No. 2 Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin of China 21-15, 21-14 in the final at the Adidas Arena.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the duo made the nation proud.
“A gift for Malaysia on National Day!” said Anwar on X.
“Congratulations to mixed doubles pair Tang Jie-Ee Wei for their proud achievement at the BWF World Championships.
“Thank you for all your hard work to bring glory to the nation.”
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was first to congratulate the duo on social media.
Yeoh said it was a special moment for Malaysian sports as their win came on Merdeka Day.
“Our Road To Gold (RTG) shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are Malaysia’s new mixed doubles world champions!” said Yeoh on Facebook.
“This Merdeka Day gold medal is not only extra special, it will now forever be etched in history as one of the country’s finest sporting achievements.
“You both played exceptionally well this entire week and this victory is nothing more than you deserved. Congratulations, you have made us so proud”.
BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz echoed Yeoh’s sentiments.
“Our dream has become a reality. Not only did they win, they created history with their sweat and tears,” said Zafrul on X.
“They proved that Malaysia never gives up. World champions. Malaysian badminton roars back on the world stage.
“Thank you, Tang Jie and Ee Wei. Thank you for giving us hope. Thank you for restoring confidence. You are our inspiration.”
Former national squash player Datuk Nicol David, who is no stranger to winning world titles, said she was proud of both players.
“Wow! World champions! Congratulations to Tang Jie and Ee Wei, so proud of you both!” said Nicol on Facebook.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said: “This is the sweetest Merdeka Day gift for all Malaysians.
“It proves that with determination, discipline and togetherness, we are capable of success on the world stage.
“Congratulations to Tang Jie and Ee Wei. Malaysia is proud of you both.”
Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah will play China‘s world No. 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China for the women’s doubles world title later tonight.
The win was widely celebrated by Malaysians online.
“The greatest gift of all time for Malaysian history. Well done, we Malaysians are very, very proud of you guys. Thank you, Happy Merdeka,” said user Roslin Rajoo.
Another user, HL Quah, commented: “Congratulations… CTJ (Tang Jie) played exceptionally well, and TEW (Ee Wei) played better than she usually does! Keep it up!”
Meanwhile, user Santhirasegaran S. Vadivel celebrated the Negaraku being played in Paris.
“Negaraku being aired and sung in Paris on Malaysia’s National Day… wowww,” he said.
