A Malaysian man was arrested by Thai authorities in Sadao, Songkhla, for possessing two M16 assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The 42-year-old was arrested at a roadblock this evening, New Straits Times reported.
A Thai security spokesman said the man was travelling in a car with a Malaysian registration plate. He was stopped on the Sadao-Danok stretch of Kanchanawanit Road after he was spotted acting suspiciously.
Sadao district of southern Thailand borders Bukit Kayu Hitam in Perlis, and the main road leads from the border to Songkhla and Hat Yai.
A search of the man’s vehicle uncovered the weapons and ammunition, which were seized. The Thai authorities are now investigating why he had the weapons, and are looking into links to cross-border criminal networks.
