Ameeshenraj suffers another setback

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s second seed C. Ameeshenraj unexpectedly came up short in the US$15,000 (RM63,000) Tuanku Muhriz Trophy today.

Ranked 87th in the world, Ameeshenraj was upset by world No. 101 and sixth seed Mohamed Sharaf of Egypt 8-11, 11-9, 11-3, 15-13 in 65 minutes in the men’s final at Seremban Two Sports Complex.

It was another slip by Ameeshenraj who also suffered a shock semi-finals defeat to world No. 101 Duncan Lee at the National Championships in Penang two weeks ago.

Ameeshenraj said Sharaf is a good player and his ranking does not reflect his game.

In the women’s final, another Malaysian also suffered an unexpected setback. World No. 48 and second seed Ainaa Amani was upset 11-4, 11-2, 11-2 by world No. 79 and eighth seed Nadien Elhammamy of Egypt.

Ainaa said: “I didn’t play well today as my legs were hurting as I have just recovered from a knee injury.

“It was good to reach the final for the first time after losing in the semi-finals three times in the tournament.”
