KULAI: The public and media have been urged to rely only on official sources from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and related agencies for accurate information on earthquakes.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said false information is often circulated on social media by individuals without credibility or authority.

“While social media often circulates various information, digital literacy among the public remains limited. For accurate updates on earthquakes, the public is advised to refer directly to MetMalaysia,” she told reporters after attending a special screening of Legasi Bomba the Movie at a shopping mall here on Sunday (Aug 31).

“The spread of false news can lead to serious repercussions. There is no reason for this incident to be framed as a racial issue. In today’s digital age, information travels rapidly, but it is crucial that we verify its accuracy,” said Teo, who is also the Kulai MP.

A total of 300 Kulai residents, including members of the Fire and Rescue Department, were sponsored to attend a screening of the film directed by James Lee and Frank See, which has been showing in cinemas nationwide since Aug 21. – Bernama
