PETALING JAYA:

Sarawak’s iconic river taxis, a popular mode of transport, have gone electric as the state pushes for sustainable and smart mobility.

The ride, known as E-Penambang, is an upgrade of the city’s river transport and provides for a safer, more efficient and eco-friendly mode of travel, the Borneo Post reported.

Last night, premier Abang Johari Openg, his family and state officials took a ride on the boat. Abang Johari was also briefed by Kuching North City Hall and Sarawak Energy Berhad on the operations of the new fleet, which currently comprises nine electric boats .

The introduction of the E-Penambang service is part of Kuching’s Smart City strategy, which is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of river transport.

The E-Penambang concept began in 2023 and at a soft launch on Aug 17 that year, deputy minister in the premier’s department Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the project supports Sarawak’s green economy and traditional boat operators.

The project sees nine boats being retrofitted with a 3kW electric propulsion system and is designed for silent operation, zero emissions, and lower costs.
