State Gov't Leaders Convey 68th National Day Greetings

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) — Several state government leaders conveyed their greetings in conjunction with tomorrow’s 68th National Day celebrations, emphasising their hope that Malaysians will continue living in unity.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow urged everyone to fly the Jalur Gemilang flag as it was a sign of unity among Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or background, adding that no one should be hesitant about flying the flag in front of their houses or their vehicles because of several incidents, and instead turn it into a moment to show solidarity, reject hatred and defend harmony.

“When the Jalur Gemilang flies proudly on every street, every housing estate, school and office, it becomes the symbol of our loyalty to our country, a sign of appreciation to independence and proof our love for peace.

“The 68th National Day is a historic moment that reminds us that freedom doesn’t come easy but needs to be sacrificed with blood, tears and cooperation among races who are united for their beloved country. This is the heritage that we should appreciate and defend together,” he said in his address.

Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the “Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni” theme carries a huge meaning and everyone should continue to appreciate the spirit of independence, to build a progressive country not only in terms of development, but strong in humanitarian values.

“The independence we have been blessed with is the result of our blood, sweat and tears of those who came before us. Our duty today is to fill it with a spirt of togetherness, strengthen unity and avoid discord.

“Let us stand strong together, fly the Jalur Gemilang full of pride, uphold the Rukun Negara and defend our beloved country together,” he posted on Facebook tonight.

Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nasuruddin Daud said that Aug 31 was not just a symbolic celebration, but served to remind people about the sacrifices of previous generations, including the sultans, ulama and freedom fighters.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad in his speech at the Merdeka Eve event in Ipoh tonight, said that celebrations like this should be a way to renew our determination to continue to ensure no one is left behind and every voice is heard.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Md Nor meanwhile said that independence needs to be protected, controlled, preserved and filled with values intrinsic to Malaysian culture.

Finally Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said tonight that the current struggle was not on the battlefield but a fight against complacency, laziness, corruption and discord.

“As such, the duty to fill independence today is on our shoulders and we should be armed with knowledge, unity, and love for our country as we continue to build a fair, just and united Malaysia,” he added.
