KUALA LUMPUR: Fans went wild after Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah etched their names in history by becoming the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to reach a World Championships final.

The world No. 2 defeated Japan’s third-ranked Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida 14-21, 21-13, 21-12 in Saturday’s semi-finals in Paris.

Supporters flooded the BA of Malaysia’s official Facebook page, hailing the victory as a proud moment for the nation on the eve of Merdeka.

“History created for Malaysia. Congratulations Pearly-Thinaah for the win over your long-time rivals.

“You accelerated in the second game and pressed turbo in the decider while the Japanese struggled with errors and fatigue.

“Also congratulations for breaking another record by becoming Malaysia’s first women’s doubles finalists at the World Championships.

“Hopefully Malaysia will be champions tomorrow. A perfect gift for Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day,” wrote one fan.

Others echoed the sentiment, with one supporter simply declaring: “Perfect Merdeka gift!!!!!!”

Many admitted they were touched by the achievement.
