PETALING JAYA:

Kedah menteri besar Nor’s decision to decline his nomination for a vice-president’s post in the upcoming party election is not due to any pressure on him, secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said.

He said there was nothing unusual about ‘s decision to sit out the race, adding that party members were often reminded that positions are responsibilities, not matters of prestige or something to be fought over, Berita Harian reported.

“Perhaps the time will come (for to accept the nomination), but for now he will continue to contest for a position in the party’s central leadership committee,” he told reporters in Kedah today.

He highlighted that Sanusi will continue to serve as PAS election director, including his involvement in the upcoming Sabah state election, describing it as a “crucial role”.

With Sanusi out of the running for a vice-president’s post, all top five positions in the Islamic party will be uncontested.

“I am pleased to announce that PAS continues to maintain its position as the most stable party, with all five top positions – the president, deputy president, and (three) vice-presidents’ posts – officially uncontested,” Takiyuddin said.

Earlier, Sanusi confirmed that he would not be contesting for a PAS vice-president’s post in the party elections next month.

However, he did not elaborate on the reasons for turning down his nomination for the party vice-presidency.

Sanusi has garnered a huge following in PAS, with its spiritual leader Hashim Jasin also expressing support for the Jeneri assemblyman’s nomination.

However, Sanusi said last month that he was not ready to take up the post as there were others more qualified for the role.

He had also declined to contest the PAS vice-presidency at the party’s internal polls in 2023.
