PETALING JAYA:

ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has reminded Malaysians that freedom of expression, while guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

He said all views and criticisms should be expressed prudently for the common good and not used as an opportunity to spread slander or make accusations that could divide society or undermine the dignity of others.

“Although freedom of speech is a right guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, it must be exercised wisely, within the boundaries and limits set by law,” he said in a Facebook post to mark Malaysia’s 68th National Day celebrations tomorrow.

The ruler also urged Malaysians to strengthen unity despite their differences. He said they must appreciate the peace and independence the nation enjoys today, and preserve harmony among races, religions and cultures.

“As we mark Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day, I call on all citizens, especially the people of , to reflect on the true meaning of independence, a freedom won through the sacrifices, sweat and tears of our forefathers who fought tirelessly to free this nation from colonial rule.”

Sultan Sharafuddin emphasised that Merdeka is more than a symbolic event; it represents a significant responsibility that every Malaysian must uphold with unity, a strong sense of duty and national identity.

He also reminded the people to uphold loyalty, respect and responsibility; to use independence as an opportunity to advance themselves, their families and the nation; and to live by the principles of the Rukun Negara.
