BATU PAHAT: Three men who went viral in a video allegedly showing elements of djinn worship during a kuda kepang performance in Parit Raja a few days ago, pleaded guilty at the Syariah Court here today for performing a ritual that involved elements of polytheism.
The three, Azman Mohamed Seh, 45; Muhammad Suhail Suttrysono, 35; and Anuar Bandi, 40, entered their guilty pleas as the charges were read before Syariah judge Syazwan Mohd Yusof.
According to the charges, Azman and Muhammad Suhail were accused of performing a deviant ritual that goes against Islamic teachings, while Anuar was charged with abetting in the performance, which contained elements of shirik (polytheism or idolatry).
The act was carried out in an open area in front of a house in Parit Raja between 10pm and 1am on Aug 10 and 11.
Azman, a mechanic, and Muhammad Suhail, a security guard, were charged under Section 3 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997, which carries a fine of up to RM3,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
Anuar, who played the drums during the performance, was charged under Section 43(b) and is subject to the same punishment under Section 3 of the same enactment.
Chief Syariah prosecutor Ahmad Wafi Abdullah led the prosecution, while none of the accused were represented.
The court set next Tuesday for the presentation of facts and sentencing.
According to reports, officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) arrested the three when they came in to give statements at the Parit Raja police station.
The arrests followed the viral spread of a video of the kuda kepang performance, which contained alleged shirik elements and began circulating on social media on Aug 26.
JAINJ enforcement officers also seized several items believed to have been used in the ritual, including kuda kepang props, wings, and incense.
Yesterday, the Johor state government instructed JAINJ and the police to immediately investigate and take enforcement action.
