Grace shatters hammer record by more than a metre in Kangar

KUALA LUMPUR: Grace Wong shattered her own national record in the women’s hammer throw at the Malaysian Open Athletics Championships in Kangar on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Sarawakian launched a massive 63.53m effort with her second throw, eclipsing the 62.48 record she set during last year’s edition in Bukit Jalil in 2021.

Her throw, more than a metre better than her previous best, secured gold ahead of Algeria’s Zahra Tatar, who managed 61.37, while ‘s Park Seo Jin (59.13) at the Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium.

National coach Manshahar Abdul Jalil hailed Grace’s progress.

“She has shown tremendous improvement by breaking her own record by more than a metre,” he said. “Grace is in the right frame of mind for the Thailand Sea Games in December, but she will face a strong challenge from Thailand’s Mingkamon Koomphon, who has been throwing well recently.”
