#SHOWBIZ: Surprise collaboration on musical ode to a city

A SURPRISE studio session has blossomed into a musical masterpiece, as three of Southeast Asia’s most promising young artistes have joined forces for an emotional new single.

Nadhif Basalamah from Indonesia, Malaysia’s Aisha Retno, and Aziz Harun of Brunei have released ‘Kota Ini Tak Sama Tanpamu’, an enchanting pop ballad that’s quickly captivating listeners.

The track, which translates to ‘This City Isn’t the Same Without You’, was born out of a spontaneous meeting. During a short trip to Kuala Lumpur for Hari Raya Aidiladha, Nadhif found himself in a studio session with Aisha and Aziz, and the trio’s creative synergy was instant.

The result is a heartfelt track that explores a simple yet profound idea: a city’s charm isn’t in its buildings, but in the people who fill your days.

The song’s core message is that home is a feeling, a connection to those who make a place feel vibrant and meaningful.

Working with renowned Indonesian producer Petra Sihombing added a layer of soulful artistry to the project. Petra, known for his work with top artistes like Isyana Sarasvati and Raisa, shaped the single with his signature modern and emotive touch, transforming the trio’s initial ideas into a polished, contemporary pop hit.

“This song personally reminds me of all the wonderful memories with close friends in KL, those moments you just don’t want to end,” Aziz shared, reflecting on his own time in the city.

Similarly, Nadhif expressed his gratitude for how a casual writing session “evolved into a song that now connects three countries.”

Aisha described the collaboration as feeling like “a reunion of old friends”, even though it was their first time working together.

“The lyrics have a sweet and slightly cheeky feel when someone’s trying to convince you to extend your holiday,” she said.

With its tender lyrics, smooth vocal harmonies, and sophisticated production, ‘Kota Ini Tak Sama Tanpamu’ beautifully captures the bittersweet longing for a special person who makes a city feel whole.

The single is now available on all major digital streaming platforms.
