GEORGE TOWN, Aug 28 (Bernama) — Sarawak is intensifying strategic cooperation with Penang in an effort to strengthen the country’s semiconductor industry supply chain and ecosystem, particularly in the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the cooperation and close relationship between the two states in sharing expertise and strength in the semiconductor industry is seen as capable of driving Malaysia’s aspirations to emerge as a regional high-tech hub.
He said the two states were also focusing on efforts to complete the entire semiconductor supply chain including research and development (R&D), talent development and supporting infrastructure.
“Penang already has many global companies in the industry while Sarawak has other companies that can complete the entire supply chain in semiconductors.
“We have our own strengths, so if we work together, we will be able to increase the development of semiconductors including in R&D and talent development and be able to develop the sector faster,” he said.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, told reporters after officiating at the Sarawak Semiconductor Investment Forum here today, which was attended by semiconductor industry players from Penang and Sarawak.
The forum is organised by the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) together with InvestSarawak in collaboration with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Malaysian Semiconductor Industry Association.
Awang Tengah said MINTRED was actively driving Sarawak’s transformation into an advanced technology and semiconductor investment hub in line with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He said that to further encourage strategic engagement and position Sarawak as a growing player in the high-tech ecosystem, they were organising the forum here which is known for its E&E sector in Malaysia.
“The forum serves as a platform to highlight Sarawak’s investment-ready infrastructure, industrial roadmap and public-private partnership opportunities for semiconductors as well as enhance inter-agency collaboration between Sarawak and Penang,” he said.
He said Sarawak was also committed to developing a fully integrated and resilient semiconductor ecosystem by focusing on high-value segments such as chip design, compound semiconductors, packaging and advanced testing.
Earlier, the Sarawak Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II paid a courtesy call on Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his office in Komtar and discussed Sarawak’s collaboration in the semiconductor industry with Penang, which is considered the pioneer state in the country’s semiconductor industry.
