KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today rejected claims that the Urban Renewal Bill undermines Malay rights, affirming in Parliament that he is “not a puppet” and will ensure the community is not sidelined.
The Tambun MP said he would continue to protect the interests of the Malay-Bumiputera community.
“Do not assume this is some strategy for the Chinese to seize Malay rights. I do not agree. I am not a puppet.
“I have a mandate to defend the Malays and the Bumiputera majority and their fundamental rights,” he said during Prime Minister’s Question Time.
Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who called on the government to defer the tabling of the Urban Renewal Bill 2025 until further consultations with all stakeholders were conducted.
The prime minister said that the legislation was intended to protect Malays, particularly those in urban areas, ensuring they were not left in poverty or displaced.
