More than 60% of 500 commercial vehicle firms audited under a special audit on safety systems have failed to meet safety standards, says the road transport department (JPJ).

JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said these firms mainly failed the audit held from June 23 to July 31 because of improper installation of GPS devices.

Aedy said the audit was only the first phase in a nationwide effort targeting some 300,000 commercial vehicle operators.

“The results are disappointing. We will continue with further audits to ensure compliance,” he said after officiating the launch of e-wallet payments at JPJ counters here today.

Aedy said JPJ was working with the transport ministry to streamline the audit process, possibly through digitalisation or other more efficient methods.

He said companies that fail the audit will be given one month to rectify their weaknesses before facing further action, including the possible cancellation of their permits.

Repeat offenders will be referred to the Land Public Transport Agency for enforcement action.
