PETALING JAYA:

A 30-year-old man who allegedly slashed his wife and himself in the neck early this morning is in critical condition, say police.

Barat Daya police chief Sazalee Adam said the suspect suffered severe injuries to his neck and left wrist.

His wife, 28, suffered neck injuries but was in stable condition, he said.

The husband and wife, who have a three-year-old daughter and have been married for six years, are being treated at Penang Hospital, Bernama reported.

Sazalee said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the incident, which took place at a double-storey terrace house at Taman Tunas in Sungai Ara.

He said the couple did not have financial issues nor did they suffer from depression, adding that they “lived a happy life”.

He also said the couple had graduated from a university in Beijing, , and could speak Mandarin as a second language. They are both teachers who work in different schools in the district.

“The suspect is believed to have used a knife from the kitchen before slashing his wife and himself. We believe the incident occurred when the victim had just woken up and was about to pray before getting ready for school.

“We are still carrying out the investigation as the man does not have any criminal record or history of mental health issues or depression,” he said.

Sazalee said nothing suspicious was found from the couple’s WhatsApp conversations, adding that witnesses did not notice any change in behaviour between them as of yesterday.

He also said the couple’s statements will be taken later, while the man will be arrested and remanded to assist in the investigation once he recovers.

The investigation is being held under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
