Pontian house fire: Cops classify case as sudden death pending post-mortem

PONTIAN: Police have classified the deaths of two Thai men in a house fire as sudden deaths, pending the post-mortem examination results.

District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the victims aged 27 and 31 were confirmed dead at the scene, while four others were injured when a fire ripped through a single-storey terrace house in Lorong Manggis here this morning.

The 11am blaze trapped seven male occupants inside the unit, all believed to be workers from Thailand.

“Three others, aged between 39 and 48, suffered minor injuries while another, aged 30, was seriously hurt and rushed to Pontian Hospital,” he said in a statement.

Firemen managed to bring the fire under control before it spread further.

Police and the Fire and Rescue Department are conducting detailed investigations to determine the cause of the fire.

Shofee urged the public not to speculate on the incident and to channel any information to the Pontian police hotline at 07-6869999.
