PONTIAN: The bodies of two Thais were found in a house in Lorong Manggis, off Jalan Johor Baru-Pontian, which was gutted in a blaze which was earlier reported to have injured four people.
Pontian Baru fire station chief Mahadir Mamat, said the bodies of the deceased, identified as Nasri, 31, and Masabuding, 37, were found near a window and under the collapsed roof structure.
“One was found near a bedroom window with 80 per cent burns, and the other under roof debris with 95 per cent burns.
“The remaining victims survived the fire but sustained burns. One victim suffered severe burns on 40 per cent of his body, while three others sustained minor injuries. Another man managed to escape unhurt,” he said in a statement today.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-storey permanent structure measuring 20×40 ft engulfed in flames, with about 80 per cent of the property destroyed.
“Fire suppression was carried out using one 200-foot line with two nozzles and another 200-foot line with a single nozzle. The fire was brought under control by 11.15am,” Mahadir said.
He said fire also severely damaged part of an adjoining house.
Earlier, it was reported that the critically injured man was buried under the rubble of part of the collapsed building.
He had been trapped under the rubble of the collapsed roof and had to be rescued by firemen.
Three other men in their 40s were also injured in the blaze, which broke out about 11am.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
