KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) — Malaysia and Turkiye today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation between their national archival institutions.
In a statement, Malaysia’s Ministry of National Unity said the MoU encompasses collaboration in areas such as historical research, preservation, and the digitisation of archival documents, in accordance with existing laws and policies in both countries.
“The preservation of archival materials is not only a matter of technical expertise and digitisation, but also a reflection of our deep appreciation for the identity, values, and cultural roots that shape our nations,” the ministry said.
The MoU outlines joint efforts in archival research and the exchange of copies of historical documents, books, guides, inventories, and published research materials.
It also includes provisions for sharing expertise in modern archival technology, digitalisation and restoration practices; co-organisation of scholarly meetings and exhibitions; and commitment to contributing archival document replicas for joint displays.
In the statement, the ministry also highlighted that the bilateral cooperation demonstrates a shared commitment to safeguarding and enriching historical heritage, a legacy that serves as a testament to past civilisations and diplomatic ties.
“Malaysia firmly believes that access to authentic historical information strengthens national identity and fosters cross-cultural understanding beyond borders,” the statement added.
The MoU was signed by Malaysia’s Minister of National Unity, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, and Dr Muhammet Ahmet Tokdemir, Director of the Directorate of State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkiye, in Istanbul.
The Malaysian delegation also toured Turkiye’s state-of-the-art archival facilities, which house records dating back to the Ottoman Empire. The archives span over 700 kilometres of shelving, with approximately 70 per cent of the collection already digitised.
The ministry also expressed confidence that the partnership will provide a strong foundation to enrich Malaysia’s national archive collection, expand its network of archival expertise, and support the broader mission of preserving both regional and global historical heritage.
