Classified Crime unit to probe Palapes cadet's death after court orders exhumation

KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Reserve Officers’ Training Unit (Palapes) cadet, Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, will be taken over by Bukit Aman’s Classified Criminal Investigation Unit.

In a statement yesterday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the police were committed to upholding the court’s decision and ensuring the process is handled with professionalism and integrity.

“The police give their full commitment to comply with all orders issued by the court.

“To ensure proper coordination and a thorough investigation, the case will now be taken over entirely by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT), D5 Division, Bukit Aman, effective immediately,” he said.

Yesterday, the High Court ordered the remains of the cadet to be exhumed and a second post-mortem be conducted.

The application was submitted through the law firm Naran Singh & Co.

The court, presided over by Justice Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet, granted the exhumation and issued three key orders.

Bhupinder ruled that the post-mortem of Syamsul, 22, buried at Kampung Rinching Ulu Muslim cemetery, must be carried out under the supervision of the inspector-general of police.

The second order is for a forensic pathologist from Kuala Lumpur Hospital to conduct the post-mortem on the body of Syamsul Haris within 14 days after exhumation, in the presence of forensic expert Datuk Seri Dr Bhupinder Singh and family-appointed lawyer, Datuk Naran Singh, or his representative.

The third order is for the forensic pathologist conducting the post-mortem to issue the report within a reasonable period from the date it is conducted, and a copy of the report is to be given to Messrs Naran Singh and Co.

Kumar also assured the public and the family that the police will carry out their duties based on the rule of law.

“The investigation will be conducted transparently and with full integrity, in line with the principles of justice and the rule of law,” he said.
