PETALING JAYA:

National singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao advanced to the second round of the World Championships in Paris after defeating Switzerland’s Tobias Kuenzi 21-12, 21-14 in his opening match.

Jun Hao, ranked world No 25, took just half an hour to overcome Kuenzi, the world No 148, in their first-ever meeting in an international competition.

His real test will come in the next round against either Japan’s world No 14 Kento Nishimoto or Taiwan’s world No 28 Wang Tzu Wei.

The 26-year-old has struggled on the World Tour this year, suffering six first-round exits.

This tournament marks his debut at the World Championships.

In the women’s singles, it was a disastrous debut for Goh Jin Wei, who was outclassed by ‘s Gao Fang Jie 21-14, 21-9 in the opening round.
