Zambry: No agreement for 10,000 Bangladeshi students to work here

KUALA LUMPUR: Higher Education Minister Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has denied a claim by a Kedah state exco member that the federal government has allowed 10,000 Bangladeshi students to work in Malaysia.

In a statement, Zambry said Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, Kedah’s Industry and Investment, Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation Committee chairman, should be more careful about making such claims.

He said Haim had accused him of agreeing to a “Graduate Pass” allowing 10,000 Bangladeshi students to work in Malaysia based on a news report in Bangladesh.

Zambry said the accusation was “completely false and inaccurate” and that Haim’s claim that people were “uneasy” because of a supposed agreement was “irresponsible”.

He added that no Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or agreement on such a deal was signed during the recent visit of Dr Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the government of Bangladesh.

The minister said Haim, as an academic, should make statements based on facts and not speculate or spread misinformation.

“Academic principles require information to be accurate and true,” Dr Zambry said.

“This culture of producing viral content on social media with inaccurate information must stop.”
