MOSCOW, August 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — The parties to the Geneva Conventions must urgently put pressure on Israel to stop the attacks on Gaza, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“Considering the imminent risk of the further commission of serious violations of international humanitarian law, States parties to the Geneva Conventions are under an urgent obligation to exert maximum pressure on Israel to immediately halt this offensive, which risks triggering an unprecedented, life-threatening humanitarian crisis and permanently extinguishing the Palestinian presence in Gaza’s largest urban area,” the communique, published on Wednesday, read.
Over the past two weeks, OHCHR recorded 54 attacks on residential buildings in Gaza City that killed at least 87 Palestinians, including 25 children, the statement added.
On Wednesday, the Kan state television and radio company reported that Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had approved an operation to capture Gaza City. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it had sent out about 60,000 summonses for reservists in preparation for the operation to seize Gaza City. Israeli Army Radio reported that Israel’s military operation to capture Gaza would last until 2026, and at the peak of the maneuvers, up to 130,000 reservists would be involved.
According to the OHCHR, there have also been attacks on displaced people’s homes, including tents and schools, killing at least 14 Palestinians, although these figures represent only a fraction of the real toll.
The UN office also said that the forced displacement of the Gaza City population, including those who remained in northern Gaza, “with no provision from Israel for their shelter, food or essential medical care,” and with indications that they will not be allowed to return to their homes, raised serious concerns of “grave breaches” of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
