GEORGE TOWN: The Public Works Department (PWD) will work closely with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to conduct a comprehensive geotechnical assessment following a landslide that occurred earlier today along Jalan Paya Terubong.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the findings of this technical investigation would be vital in evaluating the condition of the slope and in formulating long-term repair and mitigation strategies.
“The results will serve as an essential guide to ensure the structural stability of the slope and prevent the risk of future landslides,” he said in a Facebook post.
The landslide, which occurred at around 1.30pm, did not result in any injuries or loss of life.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, he said the state PWD team responded swiftly by deploying crews to the scene.
Emergency measures were promptly put in place, including covering the affected slope with canvas to reduce the possibility of further collapse.
“This fast response was made possible through close coordination between multiple agencies,” he said.
Nanta reiterated the federal government’s commitment to prioritising public safety, particularly in areas deemed high-risk due to unstable slopes.
“We will monitor this case closely and ensure that all necessary repair works are carried out without delay, for the well-being of the local community,” he said.
