A parliamentary group involving MPs from both the government and opposition has agreed to draw up a document aimed at combating hate speech, particularly involving the 3Rs of race, religion and royalty.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on racial and religious harmony met yesterday for only the second time this year, with DAP’s Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan chairing the meeting.
In a statement, the group said the MPs agreed to draft a document on the definition of hate speech and the standards involved, in line with Malaysia’s plural society.
The document will serve as a proposed guideline for the enforcement of the law on hate speech and issues involving the 3Rs.
“This process will involve negotiations with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that the document meets the context and needs of Malaysia,” the group said.
The group includes opposition MPs Saifuddin Abdullah (Bersatu), Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda), Dr Halimah Ali (PAS), Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PAS), and Islahuddin Abas (Bersatu).
The group also comprises backbenchers R Yuneswaran (PKR), Lee Chean Chung (PKR), Suhaizan Kayat (Amanah), Riduan Rubin (Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat) and Doris Sophia Brodi (Gabungan Parti Sarawak), as well as Senator Mujahid Yusof Rawa (Amanah).
