About 80ha have been reclaimed under the Silicon Island project, a year after work began on what is billed as Penang’s largest reclamation venture.
The project, covering 930.78ha in total, is being carried out in two phases – 510ha under Phase 1, and 420.9ha in Phase 2. Reclamation started in September last year and is slated for completion in 2032.
Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd CEO Farizan Darus said the milestone showed that the project was on track, Bernama reported.
“This project is designed to be a driver of Penang’s long-term growth by combining world-class infrastructure, sustainable development practices and community-oriented facilities.
“It will also open up new opportunities for investment, innovation and employment, while ensuring that the local community benefits from better facilities,” he was quoted as saying in a statement today.
Farizan also said RM11.7 million had been paid out to 791 fishermen under the Social Impact Management Plan.
On top of the ex gratia payments, 118 of 295 active fishermen have received new boats and engines worth nearly RM10 million.
Silicon Island, located off the southern coast of Penang Island, is part of the Penang South Islands master plan and will serve as an extension of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.
