A university student from China charged with eight counts of attempted murder and causing injury to seven people has been ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation for a month starting today.
The Kajang sessions court allowed an application by deputy public prosecutors Faelly Jeffrey Lanjungan and Siti Nur Alia Safri, who said Liu Ting, 24, appeared confused and did not understand the charges read to her.
The court ordered Liu to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, for psychiatric evaluation, and set case mention for Sept 19, Bernama reported.
“As the charges were read, the accused appeared confused, as if she did not understand them. Therefore, we request that the accused receive psychiatric treatment at Hospital Bahagia,” said Faelly.
Liu pleaded not guilty to three charges of attempted murder of two men, aged 19 and 21, and a 35-year-old woman.
The charges under Section 307 of the Penal Code provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine, and up to 20 years if injury is caused.
She also pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to a 60-year-old woman by slashing her right arm with a knife and stabbing a 27-year-old man in the stomach.
Both charges under Section 326 of the Penal Code provide for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.
In the magistrates’ court, Liu was charged with three counts of voluntarily causing hurt to two men, aged 21 and 49, as well as a woman aged 53, using a knife.
She indicated that she understood the three charges read out by the interpreter, but remained silent.
All three charges under Section 324 of the Penal Code provide for up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine and whipping or any two of those punishments, if convicted.
The eight offences were allegedly committed at the Metro Point Complex junction on Jalan Besar and Jalan Semenyih in Kajang, and at Metro Point between 11.39am and noon on Aug 13.
A video of the incident on social media shows a woman involved in an accident, before exiting her vehicle holding a knife.
Also visible were several injured motorcyclists and attempts by the public to restrain the woman.
