Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham has claimed trial in the magistrates’ court here to causing public fear by making a statement on social media.
The Gombak Setia assemblyman pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Amira Abd Aziz.
Hilman was accused of making the statement in a TikTok video at around 2.09pm on July 30.
The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements leading to public alarm and distress. If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
Badius Zaman Ahmad, deputy head of the prosecution division at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, proposed bail of RM10,000.
However, Hilman’s lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali sought a lower amount, saying his client had cooperated with the police throughout their investigation.
Amira fixed bail at RM4,000 and set Oct 9 for the submission of documents.
Around 50 Perikatan Nasional (PN) supporters as well as 10 leaders of component parties were at the Kuala Lumpur court complex to show support for Hilman.
They included PN secretary-general Azmin Ali, Wanita Bersatu chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, and PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.
