
A senior assistant director of a government department has been remanded on suspicion of soliciting and receiving sponsorships to fund overseas trips from several companies and individuals.
According to a source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the suspect, in his 40s, was arrested at about 6.30pm yesterday when he was summoned to provide his statement at the agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya.
Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin issued a four-day remand order for the suspect, effective until Aug 23, this morning.
“An initial investigation suggests the suspect solicited and received sponsorships from several companies and individuals to finance trips to multiple overseas destinations between March 2023 and January 2025, in connection with the Dubai Orchid Export Farm project.
“The project is valued at an estimated RM125 million and the travel sponsorships received are believed to be worth more than RM50,000,” the source said.
Putrajaya MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for corruptly soliciting, receiving, or agreeing to receive any gratification for oneself or another person.
