Senior govt officer remanded over RM50,000 bribe probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a remand for a senior government officer for an investigation into claims that he solicited bribes and overseas trips from several parties.

The suspect, who is in his 40s and serves as a deputy director at a government department, was remanded for four days until Aug 23 by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin following an application by the MACC at the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (Aug 20).

Sources said the suspect was arrested at about 6.30pm on Tuesday (Aug 19) after he turned up to give his statement at the MACC headquarters in .

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have solicited and received sponsorships from several companies and individuals to finance his trips abroad between March 2023 and January 2025.

“The trips were linked to the Dubai Orchid Export Farm project, estimated to be worth RM125mil. The sponsorships amounted to over RM50,000,” the source said.

MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest when contacted and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
