: The setting up of a proposed cyberbullying tribunal will be brought to the coming Cabinet meeting this Friday (Aug 22), says Datuk Seri Ibrahim.

“The proposal will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting,” the Prime Minister told reporters after attending the Finance Ministry’s monthly gathering here on Wednesday (Aug 20).

On Tuesday (Aug 19), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the government is also studying the possibility of establishing a cyberbullying tribunal and an e-Safety Commissioner.

She said this is to ensure faster remedies for victims, rehabilitation for offenders and stronger digital safety education, especially for children.

The proposal, she added, would be handled by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department.

The proposal comes following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was found unconscious in a drain at 4am on July 16 near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah.

She was pronounced dead at Hospital Queen Elizabeth on July 17.

Five teenagers are expected to be charged under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code related to bullying only and not causing the death of the 13-year-old girl.
