BUKIT MERTAJAM: The resilience of two siblings in the face of hardship and health struggles has drawn the attention of Bukit Mertajam member of parliament Steven Sim.
Moved by their story, Sim helped them rebuild their unsafe, dilapidated home.
The human resources minister also helped refurbish a long-abandoned food stall once operated by Umi Kalsum Nayan, 52.
The goal is to provide her brother, Rosman, 46, a heart patient, with a means to earn a living and support his family.
Despite her own poor health, Umi Kalsum, fondly known as Kak Umi, has remained steadfast, taking on odd jobs in her village to make ends meet while constantly worrying about her brother’s condition.
Rosman suffers from a heart condition and is unable to do strenuous work.
The siblings lived in their late mother’s ancestral home, but they were forced to leave as the collapsing ceiling posed a danger.
“What strikes me most about Kak Umi is her selflessness. Her concern has never been for herself, but always for her brother and his family,” Sim said in a Facebook post.
Sim helped restore the family home, a symbol of hope, love and resilience.
“A home is more than just walls and a roof. It represents family, struggle and the fulfillment of promises.
“It is the foundation upon which a family can rise again.”
During a recent visit to the siblings, Sim was heartened to see the home beautifully rebuilt.
“Two days ago, Kak Umi called me with joy in her voice. She told me the house was completed and invited me to a kenduri doa selamat (thanksgiving prayer feast).
“I attended, along with local surau members and neighbours of all races, a true reflection of unity and community spirit.”
The home’s reconstruction was a community effort involving more than 20 students who were part of a leadership course organised by First CDK Engineering.
Kak Umi’s old food stall was also fully renovated, allowing Rosman to run a small business to support his family.
“I will continue to support them, especially since Rosman still has two children in school.
“I truly hope this marks a fresh start towards a better life for them.”
