Family of jogger struck by drunk driver fulfils her organ donation wish

TAWAU: The family of a 41-year-old woman, who died after being struck by a pick-up truck driven by a suspected drunk driver, has honoured her lifelong wish of helping others by donating her corneas.

Sanni Tajudin, 34, the younger brother of Darna, said his sister had previously expressed her desire to become an organ donor after learning about someone else’s commitment to the cause.

He added that Darna had always loved helping others.

“To fulfil her wish, our family agreed to allow the hospital to perform surgery for my sister’s cornea donation,” he said.

Sanni recalled the conversation with Darna in which she expressed her interest in becoming an organ donor.

“She had not registered yet. I always said, ‘Wait, if there’s an organ donation campaign, then register.

“I never expected that her wish would come true even though she is no longer with us.

“Besides that, she was also a regular blood donor and loved helping others,” he said.

The family also hopes the police will continue investigating the case and ensure the pick-up driver who hit Darna is brought to justice.

Darna’s close friend, Suarni Sudirman, 36, recalled that they had planned jogging sessions with several friends about two weeks before the accident on Aug 10.

“She also once asked, ‘If I die, will people come to visit?’

“I told her not to speak like that, but she continued, saying, ‘Maybe they will go while running because that is my interest.'”

Earlier today, it was reported that Darna died after seven days in the intensive care unit at Tawau Hospital.

She was pronounced dead after being declared brain dead this morning.

During the accident on Aug 10, Darna was jogging with her friends when a pick-up truck, driven by the suspected drunk driver, rear-ended a car.

As a result of the collision, the pick-up truck lost control, veered onto the roadside, and struck Darna.
