MACC nets over RM285mil in 2024 operations

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) froze, seized, confiscated, and issued compounds totalling over RM285 million through its operations last year.

However, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the largest asset seizure this year was linked to the graft buster’s investigation into former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, amounting to RM177 million.

Speaking at the MACC Media Awards 2024 tonight, Azam reminded the press to uphold the principles of ethical journalism by prioritising facts, avoiding speculation and verifying sources before publishing.

“In this fast-paced and volatile digital world, fake news can tarnish the image of institutions, undermine people’s confidence and thwart reform efforts.

“Therefore, mainstream media along with credible news portals should be the main pillar in ensuring accurate information reaches the public,” he said in his speech.

Azam added that MACC’s role extended beyond enforcement to include corruption prevention and public education.

Among its educational programmes are Anti-Corruption Heroes (WAR), Kedai Jujur, Anti-Corruption Student Forces (AMAR), and the Anti-Corruption Student Volunteer Corps Cadets (SUAR Corps), which are implemented at all levels of education — from primary to tertiary institutions.

He also emphasised that corruption prevention is part of Malaysia’s commitment to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).
