Suspect in beggar stabbing remanded seven days

KUALA LUMPUR: A man who allegedly stabbed a fellow beggar to death in front of a bank in Section 18, Shah Alam yesterday has been remanded for a week until May 1 to facilitate investigations.

Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the remand order against the 28-year-old suspect was granted at the Shah Alam Hospital’s Observation Ward at 3.15pm.

“The remand order was issued by magistrate Nur Azureen Zainalkefli. The suspect is currently warded in the observation ward due to seizures.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a registered person with disabilities (PwD) under the intellectual disability category,” he said, as quoted saying to Buletin TV3.

Mohd Iqbal said that based on a post-mortem examination conducted at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR), the victim died from a stab wound to the chest.

“The victim did not possess a PwD card, but had sustained a right leg injury in a road accident three years ago and had been using an orthopaedic device.

“Checks revealed the victim was married and lived in Sentosa with his wife, who works as a security guard,” he added.

Yesterday, media reports indicated that the fatal incident occurred during a dispute between two beggars allegedly fighting over territory.

Mohd Iqbal earlier confirmed that both the 40-year-old victim and the suspect, a local man, had been begging in the same area at the time of the incident.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
