KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has called on authorities to take firm action against anyone committing offences involving the improper display or hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party views repeated offences in this matter as serious, given that the national flag represents the dignity and sovereignty of the country.
“Firm and stern action, including prosecution, must be taken against anyone committing such offences, regardless of the reasons given, in accordance with the existing provisions of the law,” he said at a press conference after the party’s supreme council meeting last night.
Earlier, Terengganu Umno Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera apologised for a mistake in a Jalur Gemilang graphic posted on its social media, which he said was made by a freelance graphic designer.
On Aug 10, police arrested a 59-year-old man over the display of an upside-down Jalur Gemilang at a shop in Kepala Batas, following nationwide reports.
The man has since been released.
