KUALA LUMPUR: At least two celebrities are being monitored by the Road Transport Department (RTD) for failing to renew road tax and insurance for their exotic vehicles.
RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said those being monitored also included business tycoons and influencers for similar offences.
“Based on our latest intelligence, some of these people are on the list of vehicle owners whose road tax is believed to have expired.
“Investigations so far, however, show that their vehicles are not currently being driven on public roads,” he told reporters at the RTD Kuala Lumpur impound depot on Saturday.
Kifli warned that if these vehicles are detected being driven without valid road tax, stern action will be taken.
He said that monitoring high-profile people was not intended to embarrass anyone.
“It must be remembered that RTD is not out to find fault, but to ensure that every person complies with the rules in place.
“Compliance with the law is an obligation for everyone, with no exceptions,” he said.
This is not the first time local celebrities have been on the RTD’s radar for such offences.
During the first Op Luxury in June, a local actress’ Porsche was among 101 luxury vehicles seized. It was learnt that the actress’ car was being driven without valid road tax.
The car was later released after she renewed the road tax on June 24.
The public is encouraged to report any legal violations via the MyJPJ app (e-Aduan) or by emailing [email protected] with complete complaint details.
Op Luxury will be carried out periodically to ensure that only legal, safe and registered vehicles are allowed on the roads.
