KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) will work with the relevant agencies to establish standards for steel use in buildings, Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong said today.

He said the move follows feedback from architects who enjoy working with steel but often face challenges due to standard-related concerns.

While concrete is often the preferred choice for its lower cost, steel offers significant advantages. Liew said it was longer lasting, lighter in weight and easier to repurpose, helping to minimise wastage over its lifecycle.

He added that the matter was discussed at a recent dialogue he organised involving architects, engineers and steel industry players to explore ways to encourage greater use of the material in buildings.

“Throughout my time in MITI, I have seen firsthand that Malaysia has strong capabilities, not only in manufacturing but also in services. We should strengthen horizontal linkages between these strengths so that industries can learn from and inspire one another.

“With the right dialogue and inputs from industry players, we can create the conditions for innovation to flourish and reshape industries,” Liew said.
