Ampang PKR chief Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad has played down speculation that Tengku Zafrul Aziz will be named as a candidate for a state or parliamentary seat in the 16th general election (GE16), saying such talk is expected in politics.
Syed Ahmad, who is better known as the rapper Altimet, noted that it’s not unusual in Ampang PKR for members without party posts to serve as elected representatives.
He said the Ampang PKR division welcomed the investment, trade, and industry minister’s membership, which was confirmed by party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh.
“As for any speculation that may arise, that’s normal in politics.
“In Ampang PKR, we have members who hold no party posts but yet serve as elected representatives – like Selangor state assembly deputy speaker Kamri Kamaruddin,” he told FMT.
Rodziah Ismail is Ampang MP, having won the seat in the last general election (GE15) in November 2022. In the Selangor state polls held in August 2023, Syed Ahmad won the Lembah Jaya seat while Kamri won in Bukit Antarabangsa. All three are from PKR and were elected under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner.
Last February, FMT cited sources as saying Tengku Zafrul was expected to contest a seat in Selangor at the next general election, with Ampang seen as his top choice. Petaling Jaya and Pandan were also said to be under consideration.
On May 30, he announced his resignation from Umno and his intention to join PKR.
Yesterday, media outlets reported that Tengku Zafrul had confirmed he is now a member under the Ampang PKR division.
