Two salesmen pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court today to a gang robbery involving a Chinese national that resulted in losses totalling more than RM2.1 million.
Syaqir Ami, 30, and Mahsar Nor, 34, made their plea before judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin, Kosmo reported.
The duo, along with two others at large, are alleged to have robbed the 31-year-old victim at a house in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, at about 10.10pm on July 21.
Among the items stolen were a branded watch worth RM1.2 million, three gold bars weighing 300g, RM100,000 in cash and five mobile phones, with total losses estimated at RM2,146,000.
The charge, under Section 395 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nidzuan Abdul Latif did not offer bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and the huge loss.
“If the court allows bail, I request a high amount for each accused, along with additional conditions requiring them to report to the nearest police station monthly and to surrender their passports to the court,” he said.
Lawyer Hazwan Hassan, representing both accused, appealed for bail to be granted and raised no objection to the additional conditions proposed.
Hazwan said Syaqir and Mahsar earn RM2,000 a month each. He said Syaqir has to care for his mother, who has stage four cancer, and Mahsar is supporting his wife and two young children.
The court allowed bail of RM15,000 each with the additional conditions requested by the prosecution and set Sept 30 for mention of the case.
