ALOR STAR: The father-in-law of a policeman who was killed after being run over by burglary suspects earlier today described him as a loving person who was always ready to lend a hand.
Mohd Yusoff Murad, 67, said the late Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, was like a son to him.
“I loved him like my own. He would give us pocket money every month, looked after the well-being of the family and was especially attentive to his in-laws and siblings-in-law.
“But God loves him more. We have accepted this loss with a heavy heart,” he said when met outside the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital Forensic Department here today.
It was reported earlier that Hafizul was killed in the line of duty after he was run over by a sport utility vehicle driven by one of four suspects during a break-in in Taman Golf here around 3.30pm.
The suspects were all detained within an hour of the incident.
Hafizul, who hails from Setiu in Terengganu, leaves behind his wife, Nur Azhanis Mohd Yusoff, 36, and their three children aged 4, 9 and 11.
Yusoff said the last time they saw Hafizul was just days ago when he and his wife dropped off their youngest child at his home in Kubang Rotan.
The tragedy also left a deep impact on his sister-in-law, Nur Najwa, 32, who had been staying with the family for the past week to help care for the children after her sister started a new job.
“He always helped out, no matter what the situation. That was just who he was,” she said.
Meanwhile, Azhanis was visibly distraught and had to be consoled by relatives at the hospital.
