Zara's mother arrives at police station to hand over phone

KOTA KINABALU: The mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir turned up at the Karamunsing police station today to hand over her mobile phone to the police.

Accompanied by her legal team and representatives from a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Zara’s mother arrived at the station at about 3.30pm before entering to submit the device.

She was seen carrying a plastic bag believed to contain the phone, escorted by an NGO representative.

The legal team is expected to hold a press conference after handing over the device.

It is understood that the phone contains an audio recording of a conversation between the mother and Zara, believed to have taken place before the teenager’s death.

The recording is expected to serve as crucial evidence in the authorities’ ongoing investigation to determine the actual cause of the Form One student’s death.

Zara Qairina, 13, was found dead after allegedly falling from the third floor of a school hostel in Papar last month.

Earlier this week, the clothes Zara wore on the night of the incident were also handed over to the police.

The family’s lawyer, Hamid Ismail, had earlier urged the public to stop spreading false information, saying it not only disrupts the investigation but also deeply affects the grieving mother, who remains under emotional distress.
