PETALING JAYA:

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has stopped admitting international students into its postgraduate programmes, in line with its mission to prioritise Bumiputera education.

Its vice-chancellor, Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin, said the decision followed an internal review to ensure alignment with the university’s founding mandate under the UiTM Act 1976, with reference to Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

“We’ve not accepted direct international enrolments for a year, but the current international students are completing their studies,” Bernama reported him as saying today.

Shahrin said foreign students were still accepted under exchange programmes to maintain international learning elements.

On concerns over the commercial UiTMSeat Plus intake, Shahrin said it was not a primary entry channel like the Central University Admission Unit (UPU).

“Only 46 out of 199,000 students entered through UiTMSeat Plus, showing that we remain focussed on UPU applicants, especially from the B40 background,” he said.

Student group Suara Siswa UiTM had questioned the UiTMSeat Plus plan, arguing that low-income students would not be able to enter via the commercial route.
